Africa Consortium

The Africa Contemporary Arts Consortium carries out its work through four interrelated and interdependent program areas. Each includes a range of activities that Consortium members individually and collectively develop, host, present and support:

Investing in Research and Building Knowledge

Through attendance at performances, workshops and meetings throughout the world, Consortium members gain broad knowledge of contemporary African performing arts with particular attention to their social, political and cultural history and context. Through this networking, the Consortium also aims to identify African partner organizations.

Investing in the Creativity of the Artist

The Consortium provides opportunities for artists to create and develop new work through co-productions, residencies and tours. The Consortium aims to facilitate the sustainability of stable working environments for artists in Africa through programs that are fluid and responsive to changing conditions. The Consortium encourages inter- and intra- continental travel and collaboration to help combat the isolation African artists often experience due to challenges posed by geography, economy and/or political circumstances.

Connecting Artists, Audiences and Communities

Through presentation of public performances by African artists, in the context of multifaceted community engagement programs throughout North America, the Consortium fosters rich and sustainable connections between U.S. artists, institutions and publics and their counterparts in Africa.

Education and Contextualization

The Consortium publishes and disseminates its research and leads workshops and symposia to inform and educate the public and performing arts professionals about contemporary African work.
