David Roussève

Building an informed and involved public audience for contemporary performance is central to the work of David Roussève. Roussève has an extraordinary breadth and depth of experience in planning and conducting educational and engagement activities with people of many ages, ethnicities and backgrounds. As a Professor of Choreography in the UCLA World Arts and Cultures Department (which he chaired from 2003-06), he is fully engaged in a global conversation about the role of artists and art in the survival of the human spirit.  The range of cultures and backgrounds within the cast of Saudade offer many opportunities for engaging diverse people in cross-cultural dialogue. Indeed, the very act of these dancers' coming together, and finding common ground, creates a compelling and needed metaphor for global community that can be shared with others.

Roussève and members of the Saudade ensemble will engage communities with:

  • Pre- and post-performance talks about the content and shape of the work
  • Master classes in postmodern and traditional dance forms for students of dance
  • Lectures on the themes and collaborative construction of Saudade
  • Screenings of Roussève's work, Bittersweet, with follow-up discussions
  • Movement workshops for the general public, or designed to accommodate the needs of particular groups (e.g., women, at-risk youth, people with HIV/AIDS)
