The Africa Contemporary Arts Consortium

The Africa Contemporary Arts Consortium aims to fundamentally alter the predominant "import-export" model of cultural exchange by building long-term, deep relationships in a vital intercontinental network of partners in the U.S. and Africa. Towards this end, TACAC has engaged in a series of immersive research trips in which members spend extended time in specific communities, hosted by African artists, to carry out respectful investigations of need and interest, and to build the mutual trust on which long-term partnerships are based.

We continued this discussion with our African colleagues at the Building Enduring Partnerships meeting in November 2010 hosted by the GoDown Arts Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. U.S. report-backs took place in January 2011, in conjunction with the annual Arts Presenters Conference and will continue throughout 2011 at national and regional conferences. Crucial support for this initiative is provided by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation's Fund for National Projects.

Immersive research trips included:

  • Marjorie Neset, VSA Arts/North Fourth Art Center (Albuquerque) hosted by Panaibra Gabriel and Culturarte, Maputo, Mozambique
  • Ken Foster, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco) hosted by the GoDown Arts Center, Nairobi, Kenya
  • Cathy Zimmerman, MAPP International Productions (NYC) hosted by Faustin Linyekula/Les Studios Kabako, Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Joan Frosch, Center for World Arts at the University of Florida (Gainesville) hosted by Salia ni Sanou, Burkina Faso
