Emio Greco|PC
For Italian choreographer Emio Greco and Dutch theatre director
Pieter C. Scholten, curiosity about the body and its inner motives serves as
the starting point of the dance. Collaborators since 1995, their work belongs
in the domain of contemporary dance even as it incorporates, transforms and
questions classical elements in a constantly changing context. Greco and
Scholten make a contemporary dance that cuts its own path through established
paradigms.
Emio Greco | PC create
new dances, collaborate with artists from other artistic disciplines, explore
the possibilities and limits of dance and transfer their new insights to others
through workshops at home and abroad. In addition, the company actively stimulates
the discourse on dance in general.
The
huge success of the Company's first major North American tour, produced by
MAPP, in spring 2005 of Rimasto Orfano and Double Points: One & Two was followed by two engagements
in January 2006 of Conjunto di NERO at White Bird in Portland, OR
and the Joyce Theater in New York City. In late 2006-2007 the company returned
for the seven-city U.S.
tour of Hell. Fall 2009 marked the fourth
North American tour of Emio Greco│PC.
[purgatorio] POPOPERA is
an investigation of these intersections of refined virtuosity in one art form
with raw talent in another. With a highly sophisticated sense of ensemble and
timing arrived at through years of moving together, the dancers of Emio
Greco│PC have approached learning composer Michael Gordon's score with their
characteristic drive. Donning shiny black electric guitars, the subtle
refinement of true artistry usually seen in legs and torsos is transferred to
fingers plucking strings and voices reaching for a note.
[purgatorio] POPOPERA was a co-production of MAPP International Productions and Emio Greco|PC; Théâtre del a Ville/Paris; Holland Festival/Amsterdam; Teatro Duse/Bologna; Maison del al Culture/Amiens; and Torino Danza. The world premiere took place at the Holland Festival (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) in June 2008. Lead commissioning support was provided by Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and The Joyce Theater's Stephen and Cathy Weinroth Fund for New Work. [purgatorio] POPOPERA has received generous support from the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the Dutch Fund for the Performing Arts. [purgatorio] POPOPERA was developed during residencies at: Maison de la Culture d'Amiens (France); MASS MoCA (North Adams, MA) and Teatro Duse (Bologna, Italy). North American presenters of the work included: The Joyce Theater (New York, NY); Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center (College Park, MD) and MASS MoCA (North Adams, MA).
